Dan, I suspect that they were attempting exactly the opposite. It's only a few years after the great Civil Rights victories, and the reclamation of African heritage is in full swing. So, Blacks are cast as "highly advanced race" on the "old hemisphere" - i.e., a great civilization of Africa. 40 years later - awkward!
